Pa. man tells thief he's homeless, gets stuff back
AP News, 2010-10-21
YORK, Pa. (AP) ??? Police say an armed robber gave back everything he stole from a homeless man after learning he lives at a shelter. The York Dispatch reported Thursday that 22-year-old Larry Sanderson was outside the York Rescue Mission on Wednesday night when a man displayed the handle of a revolver and told him to empty his pockets.
The paper said Sanderson turned over his wallet, cell phone, MP3 player and cigarettes.
When the armed man asked Sanderson if that was all he had, Sanderson explained he lives at the shelter.
Police say the robber replied, "I can respect that," returned the man's property and walked away.

Cops: Break-in suspect reports his car was stolen
AP News, 2010-10-21
OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (AP) ??? A Connecticut man was arrested after police said he burglarized three condos then called officers to report that the car he allegedly used in the break-ins had been stolen. Police said 33-year-old Geraldo "Tito" Figueroa, of Waterbury, reported late Monday to Fairfield police that his car had been taken.
An officer responding to the burglaries in Old Saybrook, Conn., just hours before said he had spotted Figueroa fleeing the sceene with a pillow case full of items.
Police said a car linked to Figueroa was left at the condo complex with items inside that had been reported stolen there.
Figueroa was arraigned Wednesday on burglary and larceny charges and was ordered held on $300,000 cash bond. It was unclear if Figueroa had hired an attorney.

Tax collector tries to squash Idaho pumpkin stand
AP News, 2010-10-23
LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) ??? An Idaho family that operates a roadside pumpkin stand is scared out of its gourd after a state tax collector showed up and tried to squash the business.
The Lewiston Tribune reports the Idaho State Tax Commission has called for the closure of a family's pumpkin stand in Lewiston, a mill city along the Snake and Clearwater rivers.
Dan and Kami Charais told the newspaper that a Tax Commission employee informed them the stand was in violation of laws and had to shut its doors.
The couple says their 4- and 6-year-old children had been carving out a niche for themselves in the local jack-o-lantern market ??? to raise money for school sports, they say.
A Tax Commission representative told the newspaper that even goods sold at roadside stands are taxable and that the stand did not have a proper permit.

Library book returned to Va. college 35 years late
AP News, 2010-10-23
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) ??? A novel checked out in 1975 from the College of William & Mary library is back in the stacks.
The long-term lender is alumnus Pat Harkin, who found the book of Leon Uris' "QB VII" in a box. He says he planned to return it for the past several homecomings, but he finally made good on his intentions Friday.
The library caps its fees at $35. Otherwise, the overdue fee could have hit $1,400 at today's dime-a-day late fee.
To atone for his late return, Harkin told the Daily Press of Newport News he made a cash donation to the library. He says it was more than the $35 overdue fee, but less than the $1,400 he might have owed.

Man, 73, rides lawnmower to spring dog from kennel
AP News, 2010-10-23
HYDRO, Okla. (AP) ??? An elderly Hydro man landed in jail after springing his prized pooch from the town kennel. Instead of paying a $100 fine for not having his poodle on a leash, 73-year-old Edwin Fry decided to bust Buddy Tough out, driving his lawnmower to the city pound Oct. 13 and breaking into the cage with bolt cutters.
As the pair escaped, police officer Chris Chancellor intercepted them.
Chancellor told The Oklahoman officers had received numerous complaints about Buddy Tough, who had been in the pound before. He said Fry had been told he could retrieve the dog and sort out the fine in court.
"I've been in law enforcement 20 years, and this is the first time I've known of anyone that has busted a dog out of jail," Chancellor told The Oklahoman.
Fry spent several days in jail, and faces a municipal charge of allowing an animal to run at-large.
Fry didn't deny the charges. He told The Oklahoman that he warned police to stay away from his dog unless they wanted to face his shotgun.
As for Buddy Tough, he was euthanized while Fry was in jail.

Mass. man to be charged with toilet paper assault
AP News, 2010-10-15
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man is facing an assault charge for allegedly hitting a town hall custodian on the back of the head with a roll of toilet paper because he was angry the cleaning man was whistling while he worked.
Framingham police say 55-year-old Allen Kerner was in town hall Wednesday using the bathroom. The custodian, who didn't realize anyone was in the restroom, whistled as he replenished toilet paper rolls.
The custodian told police he was in a stall when he was struck. Kerner yelled at him about whistling and fled. The custodian pursued him, and Kerner was apprehended by police outside.
Police tell The MetroWest Daily News that Kerner will be summoned to court to face an assault and battery charge. A phone number for Kerner could not immediately be located.

Mich. man puts off heart procedure to watch game
AP News, 2010-10-07
DETROIT (AP) - A devout Michigan State football fan called timeout before doctors could install a pacemaker in his chest Thursday, deferring the procedure until after the school's football game this weekend against rival Michigan.
Major Hester said he's willing to risk death so that he can watch Saturday's game in Ann Arbor on television. The Spartans are ranked 17th in the country and the Wolverines are ranked 18th.
The 69-year-old retired office supply clerk said he put off the procedure until next week because he can't risk something going wrong on the operating table that would prevent him from watching the game.
"You never know," Hester told The Detroit News as he paced back and forth in his living room. "It's like going into combat. You may come home alive or you may come home dead."
Hester said he's aware of the risk he's taking but is willing to take the chance.
"Whatever happens, I want to see the game," he said.
His friends took Hester's decision in stride.
They say Hester gives himself pep talks to try to "keep it calm" during games, turns down the television volume to keep from getting too excited, and smacks the coffee table, screams at coaches and curses out the referees from his couch. He's even been banished to his bedroom like a scolded child and forced to watch games alone.
"I want to run the ball with them," said Hester, who suffers from cardiomyopathy. "I want to catch the pass."
